Whether you know a little or a lot about cannabis culture, you’ve likely heard people use the term “420.” While it might not mean much to the average person, it can mean a lot to people who frequently use and celebrate all things marijuana. It is used to reference a time of day, 4:20, and the calendar date, April 20. Both are commonly referred to as “a good time to smoke a blunt.”

April 20th is approaching fast; now is probably the right time to brush up on your cannabis knowledge. Learn more in this 420 product guide below, along with what you can do and purchase to celebrate the occasion.

What Is 420?

420 has a special meaning in cannabis culture today, but no one is 100% certain of the events leading up to the term being coined. However, the most widely accepted story dates back to the 1970s.

In 1971, five students from San Rafael High School in Marin County, California, used to gather beside a monument on the school campus at 4.20 pm to smoke weed. The boys, Steve Capper, Jeffrey Noel, Mark Gravich, Dave Reddix, and Larry Schwartz, chose that specific time because most activities at the school had finished for the day.

After smoking marijuana, the group, known collectively as the Waldos, would get up to some antics, which they’d call safaris. Later, Dave Reddix’s brother helped him find work as a roadie for Phil Lesh, the Grateful Dead bassist. This band has since been credited with popularizing the ‘420’ term.

In 1990, another group known as Oakland Deadheads created and distributed flyers inviting people to smoke 420, which would obviously take place at 4:20pm on April 20. Since then, “420” has become a code word for marijuana. People would text their friends ‘420’ to meet up to enjoy cannabis together, and the code word was particularly prevalent in states where cannabis was illegal to possess and use.

How Do People Celebrate 420?

The term “420” might have originated in the United States, but it’s not the only country celebrating the official day. It’s now a global event focusing on law reform and cannabis culture worldwide. However, celebrations in the United States are definitely more well-known. Concerts and parties are held throughout the country, with cannabis being the star of the show.

HHC

HHC is the abbreviated term for hexahydrocannabinol, a compound discovered by an American chemist named Roger Adams in 1944. Adams was experimenting with hydrogenating THC when he stumbled upon HHC. Since THC was illegal at that time, and for several decades after that, the discovery remained relatively unknown. It wasn’t until recently, with the legalization of some cannabis products and the surge in their demand, that HHC gained attention once again and emerged into the spotlight.

CBD

CBD is the buzzword these days, and for good reason. It’s the second most active component found in marijuana and the most common one in hemp. CBD can be found in an array of products and can be safely consumed by both humans and animals. The best part? It doesn’t get you high, nor does it pose a threat to your well-being. CBD is legal at the federal level, but regulations may differ from state to state. It can only be extracted from hemp and must contain less than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana. At The Hemp Doctor, we’re proud to offer 100% American-made and grown CBD products that have undergone rigorous lab testing. We believe in transparency, and that’s why we make our certificate of analysis page accessible to everyone.

Here are some of our favorites:

Full Spectrum Blue Razz CBD Gummies – These blue raspberry CBD gummies are bursting with flavor and loaded with 20mg of full-spectrum hemp in each piece.

CBG

CBG, also known as cannabigerol, is a cannabinoid that’s similar to CBD and is mainly found in young cannabis plants. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp products, CBG is also federally legal. CBG works with your body’s endocannabinoid system and can even counteract the psychotropic effects of THC. Unlike THC, CBG won’t make you feel high, and it binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. CBD, on the other hand, only binds to CB2 receptors. If you’re interested in learning more about the entourage effect, head on over to our blog on the encourage effect!

Fun fact: CBG is considered the “mother” of all cannabinoids because all other cannabinoids start as CBGA, which is the acidic form of CBG.

Here are some of our favorites:

Full Spectrum High Octane Tincture – We are confident this tincture is the purest and most potent on the market. Providing exceptional value for the money.

D9 THC Chocolate – Introducing D9 THC Chocolate, the tasty and convenient way to enjoy the benefits of delta-9 THC and CBG.

Have Fun, Be Safe

With the 420 holiday right around the corner, it’s important to make sure we’re celebrating responsibly and staying safe. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

First off, avoid driving while under the influence of cannabis. Plan ahead and either designate a sober driver or arrange for alternative transportation. When consuming cannabis, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid smoking or vaping where it’s prohibited by law. It’s always a good idea to start with a low dose and pace yourself. Consuming too much cannabis too quickly can lead to an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous experience. Keep your cannabis products out of reach of children and pets, as edibles can easily be mistaken for candy or baked goods. Always store them in childproof packaging.

Finally, stay hydrated and have a healthy snack on hand. Cannabis can cause dry mouth and increase appetite, so make sure you’re prepared with water and a yummy treat.

By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy a safe and happy 420 celebration!
