7 Trending Homemade CBD Dog Treat Recipes of 2024

Bone-shaped treats for dogs with a cannabis leaf on top

Humans have been enjoying the benefits of CBD for years. Now, your tail-wagging best friend can gain cannabinoid benefits, too, through the various dog-formulated CBD products.

Like people, dogs belong to the class Mammalia, meaning they inherently have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) in place. The ECS is a biological channel of the benefits of CBD and similar cannabis compounds.

With that in mind, having a tasty CBD treat ready whenever your puppy wants to get some relaxation and comfort comes in handy. So, we’ve put together seven easy-to-follow DIY CBD dog treat recipes for your dog.

Happy baking!

🧑‍🍳 Pro Tip

We recommend using The Hemp Doctor’s Organic CBD Oil Pet Tincture in CBD-infused dog treat recipes. You will want to use your regular dosage times the number of treats in the batch. At this point, human-based CBD oil is not advised.

INGREDIENTS

  1. A pinch of black pepper

  2. Organic CBD Oil Pet Tincture

  3. Three teaspoons turmeric

  4. Three tablespoons honey

  5. Three tablespoons of coconut oil

  6. Two cups rolled oats

  7. Two cups of pumpkin puree (do not use pie filling)

DIRECTION

  1. Except for the rolled oats, mix everything in a bowl.

  2. Once thoroughly mixed, add the rolled oats to the mixture. You want to get the consistency of cookie dough, so add more or less rolled oats to achieve that thickness.

  3. Roll the dough into small balls by hand or using a melon scooper.

  4. Space the balls evenly on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and place the sheet in the refrigerator for around 15 minutes or until the treats are hard.

  5. You can store these treats in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

NOTES

Pumpkin is a great core ingredient in CBD treats for dogs because it has myriads of beneficial vitamins and minerals like potassium, vitamins C & A, and iron. Pumpkin is also great for hydration and digestion. Another equally valuable ingredient added to this homemade CBD dog treat is turmeric, an antioxidant known to boost a dog’s immune system and fight inflammation.

  4. ¼ cup peanut butter

  5. One mashed banana

DIRECTION

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

  6. Bake the treats for approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Depending on the size of your cookie cutter, you should get 15 to 30 treats per batch.

How to Prepare Your Dog CBD Oil for Homemade Treats?

If you decide to make your own dog treats from your favorite recipe when cooking with CBD, you’ll need to keep the following in mind:

  • Be sure only to use CBD oil made specifically for pets.
  • Never let the CBD get above 356℉. This is the boiling point of CBD, and boiling it will lessen its effect.
  • Try to keep your cooking temperature for anything that includes CBD between 320℉ and 356℉.
  • Infuse your CBD oil with another fat before cooking with it. Butter, cooking oil, or coconut oil works best.
  • Only use low heat when you are blending CBD oil and fat.
  • If you blend your oils ahead of time, keep them in a cool, dark place until you use them.
  • Store your treats in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.

Safety Cooking Tips for CBD Dog Treat Preparation

Avoid Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar substitute highly toxic for dogs. It’s present in some brands of CBD peanut butter and commercially available dog treats. That’s why it’s important to only purchase high-quality CBD peanut butter from brands that are extra sensitive when it comes to dog-friendly ingredients.

Properly Store Dog Treats

Store your dog’s treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If possible, keep it at the lowest level of your refrigerator to avoid accidentally freezing it.

Consider Asking Vet’s CBD Dosing Recommendation

During one of the veterinarian appointments, let the vet know about adding CBD to your dog’s treats. They will likely let you know the ideal CBD dosing practices for your dog.

Sensibly, you shouldn’t let your dog eat an entire batch of treats. Otherwise, their diet for the next meal would be ruined. One to three treats is reasonable, but no more than that. You may want to call your vet just in case there is a suspicion of overdosing, but the worst outcome would only most likely be grogginess or tummy ache.

FAQs

What kind of CBD should I use for CBD dog treats?

CBD oil and tinctures are the best type of product to use for homemade treats because they can be easily incorporated into doughs. In terms of extract type, the safest and most effective is CBD broad spectrum. This type includes all the possible benefits of CBD for dogs without THC.

How much CBD to put in dog treats?

Experts suggest going by the “2mg of CBD per 10 pounds body weight” rule, but your discretion and the vet’s recommendation should also be acknowledged.

Can I give my dog CBD treats daily?

Yes, as long as it doesn’t do any harm. Generally, CBD is administered to dogs every day, but be mindful also of possible tolerance development to CBD. Microdosing is encouraged to avoid resistance to the compound.

Can you rub CBD oil on a dog?

Yes, but it should always be in close coordination with the veterinarian.
