Austrian Hospital Uses CBD for Treating COVID-19 Patients

On January 31, 2021, the news portal Heute reported that Klagenfurt Hospital in Austria had begun using CBD to treat their COVID-19 patients. During a regimen of three weeks, the doctors at the hospital increased CBD dosages up to 300 mg for their COVID-19 patients. After this regimen, it was reported that the patients under this CBD therapy experienced a faster recovery than those that did not. Because of these results, Klagenfurt Hospital plans on continuing CBD treatment in the future.

It was also reported that Israel is working toward approving CBD on an official level for the treatment of COVID-19. It had earlier been announced in April 2020 that several research projects were launched by Israeli scientists to study the effects of CBD on COVID-19 victims.

New CBD Regulation in the US

A bipartisan bill called The Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2021 has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill is purported to be able to clear the supply chain bottleneck while also providing consumer access and protection.

The bill has a broad range of support from 18 different leaders in the hemp and dietary supplement industry. It is designed to not only clear a legal pathway to market hemp and hemp-based products, but also to direct the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to construct guidelines for the hemp-derived products. The legislation would also allow CBD and other hemp products to lawfully be sold as dietary supplements.

This bill is necessary because of the current state of the CBD market. The Farm Bill was passed in 2018, which legalized the growth and sale of hemp products as long as they contained no more than 0.3% THC. After its legalization, the CBD market exploded, bringing many new retailers. Unfortunately, many of these retailers are unscrupulous and seek to take advantage of unsuspecting customers. Since its legalization, the FDA has not provided oversight on the content and labeling of CBD products. This has led to a large amount of CBD products being mislabeled. In fact, one study showed that 70% of the CBD products studied had labels that inaccurately reflected the contents of the product. Even worse, because of the many ways to grow and process hemp, some of these CBD products contained harmful heavy metals, solvents, and toxins.

By making hemp products an acknowledged dietary supplement, the FDA can now oversee and test the ingredients in a CBD product and make sure that the labeling is accurate. This is great news for premium retailers like The Hemp Doctor, who have always insisted on a quality product and transparency to the point of having all of their products tested by a third-party laboratory. This is also a big win for CBD consumers, many of whom have been duped by less-than-honest manufacturers who carry mislabeled and sometimes dangerous CBD products.

Progress with Final USDA Regulations

In January 2021 the United States Department of Agriculture issued its final rule for the domestic production of hemp in the Federal Register. The problem in the past has been the fact that the USDA had not brought its regulations into conformity with The Farm Bill of 2018, which made the hemp products legal. This caused many issues like barring Native American farmers from being able to grow hemp on Indian reservations because state laws still made it illegal.

One of the major victories in the issuance of this final rule is the raising of the THC content in hemp crop test samples from 0.5% to 1.0%. The Farm Bill of 2018 makes all hemp products legal across the US. However, to be legal, not only must the final product contain no more than 0.3% THC, the hemp itself could not contain more than 0.5% THC. Before this new regulation, any harvested hemp that was over the 0.5% THC mark, no matter the content of the final product, had to be destroyed, and many crops were lost. By raising the threshold to 1.0%, it is much easier for farmers to meet the requirement. This is extremely good news for small farmers who have had trouble meeting the 0.5% threshold in the past.
