THC-H Explained: Potency, Effects, Comparison

THC-C is a cannabinoid exclusively extracted from Sativa cannabis variants. This rare compound offers a more potent high compared to the popular Delta 9 THC and minor cannabinoid, THCP.

Many of you reading this are likely hearing about THC-H for the first time. Simply put, it’s one of the many compounds found in the cannabis plant, along with cannabidiol (CBD), THC-A, and the well-known delta-9 THC that gives the magic herb its perceived effects

You’re likely here because you want to learn more about this lesser-popular cannabinoid, its effects, and how it compares to the THC we all know. Read on to have a deeper understanding of what it is all about, as we will discuss everything in detail in this article.

What Is THC-H?

Tetrahydrocannabihexol, or THC-H for short, is a phytocannabinoid exclusively found in the sativa cannabis variant. However, unlike delta-9, this compound is rarely seen in the plant. According to research, THC-H has been limited to the FM2 strain, a variety that is native to Italy.

Unlike THC-A and CBD, THC-H has some mind-altering effects. However, since there are limited studies about it, there are some discussions about its potency. We will discuss this in a later section.

Since THC-H is considered a minor cannabinoid and is mostly in low concentrations, some cultivators produce it synthetically. It involves quite a rigorous process, which we will also touch on later.

How Does THC-H Work in the Body?

Like all cannabis compounds, THC-H binds with the brain’s cannabinoid receptors. However, its interaction is slightly different because of its structure.

In a nutshell, it comprises six carbon side chains, unlike delta-9 THC’s five. Therefore, it becomes more readily available to bind with the CB1 receptors. According to some reports, THC-H chemicals attach to the receptors with 10% more affinity than THC.

Is THC-H Synthetic?

THC-H is among the hundreds of compounds present in the plant. However, as we mentioned earlier, its lack of abundance and lower concentrations urge cultivators and experts to produce it synthetically for either research or consumption.

In the Italian hemp variant called FM2, THC-H is present in minimal concentrations at 0.1%. Some researchers also detected its presence in the smoke of certain strains. However, the levels for extraction are likewise deficient.

How Is THC-H Made?

Producing THC-H revolves around the synthesis method known as terpenylation. Simply put, it involves adding a substance called heptyl resorcinol and combining it with a terpene derivative called p-mentha-2,8-dien-1-ol, or simply PMD.

The combination results in a reaction that creates a new molecule with added carbon atoms and longer chains than THC. This chemical process results in THC-H and other lesser-known cannabinoids like THC-B, THC-V, and THC-P

The key difference in this process is the length of the carbon chain. The longer the chain, the more water-soluble the compound, which means the body absorbs it more easily. They also tend to be more effective.

THC-H production requires six carbon chain lengths. THC-V needs three carbon chain lengths (known as propyl resorcinol), THC-B needs four carbon chain lengths (known as butyl resorcinol), and THC-P requires seven carbon chain lengths (known as heptyl resorcinol).

Does THC-H Get You High?

Several studies have concluded that THC-H is much more potent than the THC cannabis enthusiasts are accustomed to. According to anecdotal evidence, THC-H elicits more of a noticeable body high, making it ideal for physical pains.

Experts deem THC-H to be more potent than other lesser-known cannabinoids like THC-P. The effects are also known to last much longer.

THC-H Potency: How Strong Is THC-H?

THC-H is known to be 25 times more potent, with more pronounced effects. Other studies claim it is 33 times stronger compared to THC. THC-H may not be ideal for your first try if you’re a beginner user.

Experts attribute its potentially stronger hit to the stronger affinity with the CB1 receptors. However, it remains a widely unfamiliar compound and requires more research to determine its potency precisely.

How to Correctly Dose THC-H?

As we previously mentioned, THC-H carries a much stronger hit compared to delta-9 THC. That means dosing a substance that is at least 25 times more potent requires a different approach, especially if you’re new to cannabis consumption.

For beginners, the safest dose of THC-H is up to two milligrams for each use. As you get accustomed to its hit and become a more intermediate user, you can increase your intake to twice the amount at five milligrams.

You will likely develop a higher tolerance as you continue your use. For “advanced” level consumers, you can take a maximum of ten milligrams for each use.

For context, the limits for THC usage are slightly higher. If we’re calculating in edibles, microdoses are up to 2.5 milligrams, while macrodoses can go up to 500 milligrams. These larger amounts are usually intended for therapeutic purposes for severe ailments like cancer.

Moderate users, who are in the middle tier, can consume up to 15 milligrams of delta-9 THC. Meanwhile, “high-dose” users usually consume double the amount, at a maximum of 30 milligrams.

THC-H Effects: The Complete List

We also mentioned earlier that THC-H elicits more of a body high, with very little of the head buzz that certain strains of delta-9 THC are known for. And since fully understanding its effects requires more research at this point, we will use more anecdotal evidence.

Most users report a noticeable euphoric sensation, a calming effect, and an improved mood. Some people also turn to THC-H for pain management, making it a reliable therapeutic option.

So far, research has shown that this cannabinoid could potentially provide relief for appetite issues, inflammation symptoms, nausea, and vomiting. Some research also points to possible neuroprotective properties.

Is THC-H Safe?

THC-H is generally safe to consume and requires the same precautions one would give when taking THC. However, considering its potency, users may want to take a slightly different approach.

Keep in mind that THC-H elicits more of a body high, which beginner users may need to take into consideration. Often, this type of psychotropic kick leads to a “couchlock” effect, as if there is a heavy pull that keeps the body glued to the mattress.

But as long as you follow the proper dosing methods, THC-H shouldn’t bring about an unpleasant experience, particularly for first-timers.

What Are the Side Effects and Risks of THC-H?

Delta-9 THC is known to bring perturbing side effects when misused. This usually happens when a person consumes too much for their body to handle, and THC-H is no different.

Anxiety and paranoia are the two most prominent risks upon intake. Because of its higher potency, THC-H may trigger these side effects even in small doses.

Dizziness, vomiting, and nausea may also occur from misuse. Others may experience dry mouth and headaches, while some may feel fatigued and a spike in heart rate caused by a blood pressure drop.

Poor quality and misuse may also cause these adverse effects. This highlights the importance of purchasing from a reliable source, like a licensed dispensary.

Practical Tips for the Safe Usage of THC-H Products

We’ve repeatedly mentioned how much more potent THC-H is compared to delta-9 THC and other similar cannabinoids that elicit psychotropic effects. To ensure safe usage, begin with small doses.

In an earlier section, we provided a short dosing guide. If you’re a beginner, stick with the lowest dose. You can also play it safe by going lower than the minimum to ensure a slow start.

Once you’re comfortable, increase doses by small notches. If you’re smoking, take it hit by hit. It would be unwise to jump to a full bowl from your first hit instantly. That almost guarantees a paranoia-filled experience.

Cannabis hits each person differently, and taking note of the side effects is another safety precaution to remember. This process helps you assess THC-H’s hit and gives you an idea of what the best dose for you would be.

Consult a doctor before consuming if you have medical conditions or health issues. Certain cannabinoids may have adverse interactions with specific medications, so don’t skip this step if you’re on prescription drugs.

What Are the Available THC-H Products?

THC-H can be consumed the same way as THC. For this section, we will list down the consumption methods and how they compare with each other.

Smokables

THC-H can come in bud form and smokables, but these are usually CBD flowers infused with extracts of the cannabinoid. You may feel the euphoric sensation within a few short minutes, with much longer effects.

Buds are also usually the most affordable dispensary option, with a whole gram costing up to $15.

Vaporizers

Vaporized THC-H offers the same instant effects as smokables. However, the primary difference is that it is less harsh on the lungs. And because it is odorless, you no longer need to step outside to get your quick fix.

However, vaporizers are much pricier, with vape pens costing between $20 and $80. Good-quality disposable vapes may cost around $60.

Tinctures

THC-H tinctures provide the most versatile consumption options. You can take them sublingually or infuse them into your choice of food and beverages. They are also the least intrusive. They take effect within 15 minutes, and the high can last up to four hours.

Tinctures fall within the mid-range in terms of prices. You can purchase a 1,000-milligram bottle for $30.

Edibles

THC-H edibles come in the form of candies, gummies, or beverages. They are also not as intrusive as smoking or vaping and provide dosage guidelines for proper consumption. However, the high takes at least 45 minutes before it kicks in, like with any edible cannabis product.

THC-H edibles aren’t as pricey, either. A pack of ten generally costs between $30 and $40, but some brands offer singles that cost around $6.

Because THC-H is a CBD-based synthetic derivative, it is technically legal on a federal level. However, some states have their respective provisions, which may not coincide with federal regulations.

Will THC-H Show Positive in Drug Test Results?

THC-H isn’t among the list of substances that drug tests usually catch. However, it may render a positive result due to the presence of its metabolites. Its legal status is also in the gray area, which means the federal government likely won’t focus on it, compared to delta-9 THC.

Comparing THC-H With Other Cannabinoids: THC, THCA, THC-B, THCP, and THCJD

If you’ve read this far, you’re likely wondering how THC-H differs from other cannabinoids. This section will also provide a short overview and compare each.

THC-H vs. Delta 9

As you may know, Delta-9 THC is the cannabinoid we all know. It is present in all cannabis products in the legal market today. Both THC and THC-H are intoxicating compounds, but the latter has been deemed more potent. It is also known to have more of a body high that lasts longer.

THC-H vs. THC-A

THC-A does not produce intoxicating effects, and this is the most significant difference between the two. However, they are similar in their perceived benefits against inflammation. Likewise, both are deemed to have neuroprotective properties/

THC-H vs. THC-B

THC-H and THC-B are known for their strong potency. However, the latter isn’t very much known yet, as it hasn’t been studied enough to know its effects. Like THC-H, THC-B is also available in cartridges and tinctures.

THC-H vs. THC-P

Current research has shown that THC-P is the strongest cannabinoid. If THC-H is potentially ten times more potent than delta-9 THC, THC-P is said to be 33 times more potent. However, both are believed to have a solid potential to relieve pain and inflammation.

What Are THC-H and THC-JD?

Both THC-H and THC-JD are considered to be minor cannabinoids because of their low concentrations. However, there isn’t sufficient research on the potency of the latter. Findings so far suggest that it may elicit dry mouth, anxiety, paranoia, impaired coordination, and increased heart rate.
