The Hemp Doctor Consumer Behavior Report 2026
Survey of 10,000+ verified hemp consumers conducted May–June 2026. Deployed to about 50,000 customers.
66.5% of hemp consumers surveyed are 45 or older — a finding that directly challenges the industry’s assumption that its primary audience is young and recreational. This report presents findings from The Hemp Doctor’s 2026 consumer survey, the most detailed look at verified hemp buyer behavior published to date.
Who Your Customer Is
66.5% of respondents are 45 or older. This is not a young person’s market. The core hemp consumer is a mid-life or older adult with life experience, disposable income, and a specific wellness goal.
56.5% have been using hemp products for three or more years. The average buyer is not a curious newcomer. They have explored the cannabinoid landscape and come back for more.
86.3% have personally tried Delta 9 THC. 71.6% have tried Delta 8. 65.4% have tried THCA. 31.4% — nearly 1 in 3 — have tried THCP. This is a cannabinoid-literate audience that understands the difference between products and chooses deliberately.
Why They Buy
Nearly half of all use-case selections — 48.5% — fall into just three categories: relax, sleep, and stress relief.
61.4% use hemp products to support sleep. 61.3% use hemp to manage stress or anxious feelings. 56.2% use hemp to ease physical discomfort or tension.
40.0% include euphoria as a reason they use hemp. 24.3% use hemp to enhance focus or mental clarity. 22.6% use hemp to enhance creativity.
Relaxation leads all individual use-case selections at 18.9%, making calm and relief the single strongest message in the category.
Sleep
86.7% of respondents who use hemp for sleep report a positive outcome — falling asleep faster, staying asleep longer, waking up less, or feeling more refreshed.
30.2% of all sleep benefit selections point to falling asleep faster — the single most reported sleep outcome. 23.1% report waking up less during the night as their primary benefit.
57.9% of respondents report firsthand experience falling asleep faster when using hemp products. 62.9% of sleep-focused buyers reach for gummies or edibles first.
How They Consume
55.5% name gummies or edibles as their primary consumption format — the dominant format by a wide margin. 23.1% name flower as their primary format. 18.0% primarily use vape cartridges or disposables.
These three formats together — gummies, flower, and vape — account for 96.6% of primary consumption methods. Every other format combined represents less than 4%.
How They Figure It Out
75.1% found their right product and dose through trial and error on their own. 83.8% are either using trial and error or have not fully figured it out yet.
Only 4.7% say guidance from The Hemp Doctor website helped them find the right product. Only 2.4% relied on a budtender or retailer recommendation.
The hemp consumer is self-directed. They research on their own before they ever reach a product page.
How They Evolve Over Time
62.6% of experienced customers have either simplified to one or two products or become highly intentional about what they buy. The longer someone uses hemp, the more loyal and focused they become.
32.8% describe themselves as more intentional now than when they started — they know exactly what they want. 22.9% have expanded their use, trying more cannabinoids and more formats over time.
39.3% say they need more product over time to feel the same effect. 36.7% say their response has stayed completely consistent.
Stress Relief and Timing
71.6% report feeling stress relief within one hour across all timing windows. 24.3% feel stress relief within 15 minutes — near-immediate response.
61.3% use hemp specifically for stress management, nearly tied with sleep as the top use case. Stress and sleep are the twin wellness pillars this customer base is built around.
Physical Discomfort
52.3% use hemp for monthly physical discomfort — either occasionally or as a primary reason. More than half the customer base has a cycle-related wellness need.
38.6% of discomfort users name Delta 9 THC as the most helpful cannabinoid — nearly double the next option. 20.2% name THCA as their go-to cannabinoid for discomfort.
48.9% of discomfort users prefer gummies or edibles. 25.5% reach for flower — a higher share than flower’s overall primary usage rate, suggesting flower users skew toward therapeutic outcomes.
Cognitive and Mental Experience
90.8% of respondents report at least one positive cognitive or mental experience from hemp use. Only 9.2% selected none of the above.
52.2% report reduced mental chatter or overthinking — the single most common cognitive outcome. 27.3% of all cognitive experience selections point to this outcome specifically.
38.8% report increased creativity or lateral thinking. 32.3% report improved ability to focus on a single task.
13.7% report difficulty concentrating as an experience — a finding worth acknowledging transparently.
Cannabinoid Combinations and Pairing Behavior
47.3% of CBD and THC combination users noticed some improvement in their experience — smoother, more comfortable, or less intense than THC alone.
28.0% of CBD and THC users say the CBD made the experience slightly smoother. 19.3% say CBD made the THC experience noticeably more comfortable with less edge or intensity.
Why They Chose The Hemp Doctor
52.1% chose The Hemp Doctor because of product quality and consistency — the top reason by a wide margin. Quality is the single most defensible competitive position this brand holds.
31.6% found The Hemp Doctor through search and perceived the brand as credible. 26.7% selected trust in lab testing and COA transparency as a key reason. 15.4% came because someone they trust recommended The Hemp Doctor.
36.6% named price point as a factor — but quality outpaces price as a driver by nearly 7 points.
Cross-Referenced Findings
These findings only appear when two data points from separate sections are read together.
Delta 9 is everywhere. It is the most tried cannabinoid (86.3%), the top cannabinoid for physical discomfort (38.6% of discomfort users), and a key ingredient in the top combination products.
Sleep does not equal CBN. Only 27.5% of respondents have tried CBN, yet 61.4% use hemp for sleep. Most sleep customers are reaching that outcome through gummies, Delta 9, or Delta 8 — not CBN.
Gummies dominate every use case. Gummies are the top primary format overall (55.5%), the top sleep format (62.9%), and the top discomfort format (48.9%).
Quality beats price. Quality and consistency account for 22.9% of brand selection responses. Price accounts for 16.1%. The hemp buyer is not primarily a bargain hunter.
The quiet majority. 52.2% notice reduced mental chatter. 61.4% use for sleep. 61.3% use for stress. These three outcomes — quiet mind, better sleep, less stress — describe the lived experience of the majority customer.
The veteran buyer. 56.5% have 3 or more years of experience and 66.5% are 45 or older. The core customer is a mid-life adult who has been in the hemp market longer than most brands have existed.
Flower skews therapeutic. Flower’s share of the discomfort format (25.5%) is higher than its overall primary usage share (23.1%). Flower users lean toward therapeutic outcomes more than the average customer.
The unsupported segment. 8.7% have not yet figured out the right product and dose. These are buyers at risk of churning simply because they lack guidance.
Methodology
Survey fielded May 26 through June 19, 2026. Deployed to 50,000 verified Hemp Doctor customers via email. 10,000+ responses received. The survey contained 18 questions across multiple choice, multi-select, and open-text formats.
Responses were analyzed using frequency distribution and cross-tabulation. Open-text responses were reviewed qualitatively. Percentages are based on total valid responses per question and may not sum to 100% where multi-select questions were used.
Limitations: This is a self-selected customer sample, not a nationally representative probability sample. Results reflect The Hemp Doctor’s verified customer base and should not be extrapolated to the general U.S. population. The findings describe the behavior and preferences of people who have already purchased from The Hemp Doctor.
