You may not be aware, but you have what are known as nociceptors throughout your body. Don’t worry – this is a good thing. Nociceptors is the clinical name for pain receptors, and these receptors are found everywhere, from your skin to your internal organs. These nerve endings tell your body when it is in trouble by sending pain signals to your brain. These signals alert you that damage is being done to your body and that you should respond. In most cases, this is a good thing. However, chronic pain can make daily life a miserable experience. Here’s some more information on pain receptors and how they work so that you might understand them better and possibly use that information to manage your pain response.
Types of Nerve Fibers
You have different types of nerve fibers in your body that handle different sensations. For instance, your A-alpha and A-beta nerve fibers handle things like spatial awareness and touch. But it’s A-delta and C-type nerve fibers that handle pain.
A-delta nerve fibers are the sharp pain detectors. Whenever you prick your finger, burn your hand, or do anything else to cause tissue damage, these pain receptors immediately send an electronic signal from the damaged area to the end of the nerve connection in your spinal cord. Those electronic signals are transmitted from one neuron (nerve cell) to another until it reaches the thalamus, which then sends signals to different parts of the brain. These signals go to the limbic system, which is in charge of your emotions; the frontal cortex, which is in charge of thinking; and the somatosensory sensory cortex, which is in charge of the physical sensation. The result is that you physically react by pulling away from the pain, immediately try to determine the source of the pain, and likely feel some sort of emotional response to the pain.
C nerve fibers, on the other hand, are your slow receptors. These pick up dull pains like itching or muscle aches and transmit the information through the same nerve network as would a sharp pain.
Types of Pain
Your two types of nerve receptors have a number of types of pain that they respond to.
- Silent Pain – This is when you have a pre-existing hurt, like a bruise, and someone touches it.
- Mechanical – This is when damage is done to your body through means of something mechanical, like when you cut your finger with a knife.
- Chemical – This is when there is a chemical reaction that is causing your pain, such as eating really spicy food.
- Thermal – This is when your body is responding to burning or tingling sensations caused by extreme heat or cold.
- Polymodal – This is anytime more than one of the types of pain listed above are experienced at the same time.
Phases of Pain
There are three phases that you go through when you experience pain, and you enter each phase based on the amount of time that has elapsed since the injury.
- Phase 1. This is the time period immediately after the injury. The moment you cut your finger or get stung by a bee, you are in Phase 1. This is where the pain receptors cause your body to immediately respond to the pain in order to minimize the damage to your tissues.
- Phase 2. During this phase, the pain is not as intense as what you experienced in Phase 1. However, it lasts longer. For example, Phase 1 is when you initially get stung by a bee, but Phase 2 is that lingering pain or ache you feel in the area that was stung.
- Phase 3. This is pain that lasts anywhere from days to years. This could be ongoing pain from a deep cut into the muscle that lasts until the wound heals. However, it could become chronic pain that lasts years if there was nerve damage.
Ways to Relieve Pain
There are two common methods by which pain is relieved. The first is through drugs such as opioids that modulate your pain receptors to reduce the number of signals your pain receptors send to the brain. The second method is through less addictive drugs like ibuprofen that block the pain signals from reaching the brain. Both of these methods have side effects and, depending on the individual, aren’t always a long-term solution to chronic pain.

Independence day is a patriotic day full of good food, fun in the sun, and dazzling firework displays. Because we are lucky enough for the 4th of July to land on a Saturday this year, the festivities are likely to last all weekend. This is great for most of us but a little nerve-racking for pets. After all, you don’t want to spend the entire holiday consoling your shaky, scared sidekick when you could be enjoying the festivities together! However, if you have a pet that is sensitive to loud noises and the incessant sound of fireworks has them on edge, we have a few tips to help — including CBD for pets.
Fireworks and Dogs: A Shaky Combination
For most of us, when fireworks light up the sky in colorful twinkles and bursts, it feels simply magical. Few other experiences can compare to seeing such a grand display above us in celebration of our nation. But, unfortunately, dogs don’t experience the same enjoyment as we do for a few key reasons:
1. Some dogs feel threatened when they hear fireworks.
Dogs instinctively want to protect their owners, their homes, and themselves from all threats. The noise coming from outside, echoing into the home, can make dogs feel anxious, on guard, and defensive as they attempt to understand the perceived threat.
2. The loud sounds are bothersome to some dogs.
Because dogs’ hearing is more acute than humans’, they hear sounds more profoundly, making the loud booming sound of fireworks more alarming. Also, the whistling sound can resemble a dog whistle for some dogs, perking their ears up and making them feel on edge.
3. Some dogs dislike the unpredictability of fireworks.
When we celebrate Independence Day, we anticipate the sound of fireworks in the distance, and we don’t feel alarmed. However, dogs see it as an average day that loud, unpredictable noises have suddenly bombarded. This is unnerving for them, and it can feel very scary.
If your dog seems to dislike fireworks and it triggers a sense of fear or nervousness, you may observe the following behaviors from your four-legged pal:
- Excessive panting
- Excessive barking
- Pacing around the house looking out the windows
- Hiding in a small space
Tips to Keep Fido Calm on the 4th of July
Your furry sidekick is your best pal and an important part of your family. So when they feel stressed out, you want to do everything you can to help them. You might think that nothing can be done to help your dog during the loud Fourth of July festivities, but that’s not true! You can take a few steps to reduce your pup’s tension and set them up for a more relaxed evening. Try one (or all) of these tips to help console your dog this holiday weekend:
- Try a comforting “thunder shirt” or other wraps for your dog. The constant light pressure feels comforting to many dogs, and it is a known remedy for dogs who dislike thunderstorms for similar reasons. However, remember not to make it too tight, or your dog will feel confined and uncomfortable. The idea is to have your dog feel safe like they would if they were being hugged or under a protective blanket.
- Do your best to keep your dog inside during the festivities. Unless it seems to be a potty emergency, keeping your dog indoors helps reduce the volume of the sounds and prevents your pup from running away to hide or chase the sounds. Inside is the safest place for dogs during fireworks displays.
- Make sure there is a comfortable “safe space” inside for your dog to retreat to. Some dogs feel at ease when they are inside of their crate or kennel. Others prefer a certain spot in the house. Accommodate your dog’s preferences and make sure they can tuck away from the action whenever they want. Tip: If you can’t find your dog’s hiding place during fireworks, check the bathroom. Many dogs like to slip between the toilet and bathtub where it feels safe and cool.
- Set your dog up for success. You can put a dab of lavender essential oil on your dog’s collar to promote a sense of calmness through their acute sense of smell.
CBD for Pets – Is It Safe?
Many of you know and love CBD for the way it improves your own routine, but you may not realize it can benefit your pets, too! Pets experience similar physical and emotional discomforts as humans, and CBD helps reduce them in an all-natural way. But wait. Before you start sharing your personal CBD products with your sidekick, there are a few things you should know.
While the active ingredient – hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) – is the same, products made for humans have different supplemental ingredients and dosage recommendations than pet-specific products. CBD made for pets is carefully produced to include flavors your pets will love, and dosage amounts to cater to their average size/weight.
At The Hemp Doctor, America’s Premier Hemp & CBD Dispensary, we offer multiple CBD products for pets to get their tails wagging, including:
All of our pet products are 100% THC-free and completely safe for your pets to consume.

We humans have been enjoying the benefits of CBD for years. But even CBD enthusiasts may not be aware that these same benefits are available to your tail-wagging best friend as well. This is because, as mammals, we have what is known as an endocannabinoid system that regulates things like mood, sleep, and comfort levels. One of the great things about this beneficial cannabinoid is that CBD has a calming effect when ingested. This can come in handy for your dog during stressful times. And with the Fourth of July coming up, many canines feel a lot of anxiousness when the fireworks start. Having a tasty CBD treat ready when your puppy starts getting nervous around all of the explosions would be a great idea. With that in mind, we’ve put together three easy CBD treat recipes for your pup. In each of these recipes, we recommend using The Hemp Doctor’s Organic CBD Oil Pet Tincture. You will want to use your normal dosage times the number of treats in the batch.
Pumpkin and Tumeric No-Bake CBD Dog Treats
We like the use of pumpkin in these dog treats because it has so many beneficial vitamins and minerals like potassium, vitamin C & A, and iron. Pumpkin also aids in hydration and digestion, while turmeric is a great antioxidant that is known to boost your dog’s immune system and fight inflammation.
Ingredients you’ll need:
- A pinch of black pepper
- Organic CBD Oil Pet Tincture
- 3 teaspoons turmeric
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 2 cups pumpkin puree (do not use pie filling)
Except for the rolled oats, mix everything together in a bowl. Once thoroughly mixed, add the rolled oats to the mixture. You are looking to get the consistency of cookie dough, so add more or less rolled oats to achieve that consistency. Roll the dough into small balls – you can do this by hand or use a melon scooper. Space the balls evenly on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and place the sheet in the refrigerator for around 15 minutes or until the treats are hard. You can store these treats in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
CBD Peanut Butter Cookie Treats
We like this recipe because of the main ingredient, peanut butter, which has healthy monounsaturated Omega-9 fatty acid and plenty of protein.
Ingredients you’ll need:
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- Organic CBD Oil Pet Tincture
- 2 cups old-fashioned oats
- ¼ cup peanut butter
- 1 mashed banana
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mix the amount of CBD oil you plan on adding to the treats together with the coconut oil. Add the ripe banana and peanut butter to the coconut oil/CBD oil mixture and mix together. Use a blender to mix the oats until you get the consistency of flour, then add the oat flour to the rest of the ingredients in the bowl and knead thoroughly until moistened. Take the dough from the mixing bowl and place it on a flour-dusted surface. Use your hands or a rolling pin to press the dough until it is a large, ¼ inch circle. From there, use a cookie cutter to cut the treats and place them on a non-stick baking sheet. Bake the treats for approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Depending on the size of your cookie cutter, you should get 15 to 30 treats per batch.
Frozen Sweet Potato and Yogurt CBD Treats
These frozen treats are great for hot days or during the summer. You can use mashed pumpkin (not pie filling) instead of the mashed sweet potatoes, and the number of treats you will get per batch will depend on the size of the molds you use.
Ingredients you’ll need:
- 1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato
- Organic CBD Oil Pet Tincture
- ½ cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Mix the sweet potatoes, yogurt, and coconut oil in a large bowl until thoroughly mixed. Scoop the mixture into either ice trays or silicone molds. Add your usual daily dosage of CBD oil into each mold. Put the trays into the freezer for approximately three hours. Keep the trays in the freezer and just pop out a frozen treat whenever it is needed.
Making Your Own Treats
If you decide to make your own dog treats from your favorite recipe when cooking with CBD, you’ll need to keep the following in mind:
- Be sure only to use CBD oil made specifically for pets like our Organic Pet Tincture.
- Never let the CBD get above 356℉. This is the boiling point of CBD, and boiling it will lessen its effect.
- Try to keep your cooking temperature for anything that includes CBD between 320℉ and 356℉.
- Infuse your CBD oil with another fat before cooking with it. Butter, cooking oil, or coconut oil works best.
- Only use low heat when you are blending CBD oil and fat.
- If you blend your oils ahead of time, keep them in a cool dark place until you use them.
- Store your treats in a cool, dry place or the refrigerator.

Michigan Clarifies Position on CBD Food Products
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Food and Dairy Division recently sent an email out to food manufacturers, distributors, and retailers regarding their stance on CBD and other hemp seed products that are being added to foods and beverages. In the email, the department recognized that CBD has become very popular and that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized the substance as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS). However, the Michigan department is maintaining the FDA’s stance that it has not approved the addition of CBD as an ingredient in drinks, foods, dietary supplements, or animal feed. This email was in response to the fact that many states have broken away from the FDA’s stance and created their own laws approving the use of CBD in food products in their state.
Las Vegas Legislation Pending for CBD and Cannabis Lounges
For the past few years, Las Vegas has been trying to pass legislation that would allow for anyone to be able to open what is known as CBD and cannabis lounges. This would provide a lounge type of environment where patrons could smoke a joint, vape a dab, or do anything else CBD or cannabis-related. Proponents of Assembly Bill 341 point to the fact that, while CBD and marijuana are both legal in Nevada, marijuana cannot legally be smoked in public. This bill would allow for the establishment of legal lounges where patrons could go to enjoy their CBD and other cannabis products. Proponents also point to the estimated 25 million in tax revenues that these lounges would produce. Approximately 60 percent of those tax revenues would go to Las Vegas public schools, which traditionally rank poorly compared to other public school systems in the United States.
New Vaping Regulations on Shipping
Hidden within The Appropriations Act that was signed into law on December 27, 2020, were two sections that addressed the legality of vaping and the shipping of vaping products. The first section makes amendments to the Jenkins Act that was passed back in 1949. These amendments are known as the “Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes to Children Act.” The new amendments make it so that any Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) is covered in addition to what was initially covered by the Jenkins Act. The second section included in The Appropriations Act addresses changes to the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act.
The effect of these changes in the law is that there are several new requirements for distributors who want to ship vaping cartridges or any vaping components through US mail or private carriers. In response to these changes, FedEx will no longer ship vaping products as of March 1, 2021, and UPS will only allow the shipment of vape products “by shippers who have been approved for and have signed a UPS agreement for the transportation of tobacco products.“ DHL already had a ban on shipping vape products before these new rules went into effect.
The US Postal Service issued a proposed rule and was supposed to have a final rule in place by April 27, 2021. As of the writing of this blog, however, due to a large backlash from the hemp and marijuana industries as well as other public concerns, the post office has delayed issuing a final rule. They state the need for more time in order to properly implement the changes that were ordered by Congress.

Many factors come into play when trying to answer how long CBD stays in your system. The answer will not be the same for everyone. There is also the question of which type of test you are using to detect the CBD, which influences whether or not you’ll know if the CBD is still in your system. With that in mind, here are some answers that should help you determine how long CBD will likely stay in your body.
When researching how long CBD will stay in the human body, you will find many answers. While most articles will reveal that CBD will leave the body a week or two after discontinuing use, this is no guarantee that this answer fits you specifically. The reason for the variance is because so many determining factors go into establishing an answer.
The Strength of the CBD
If you have shopped for CBD products, you will find that there are a number of strengths offered. Some will have 70 milligrams of CBD per 30-milliliter bottle, while others have 500 milligrams of CBD or more. The higher the concentration of the CBD, the longer it will stay in your system.
The Frequency of Use
Another factor is how often the CBD is used. CBD will clear out of a casual user’s system more quickly than with a daily user.
Everyone’s body composition is unique, and your physical make-up has a lot to do with how long you hold on to the CBD. Your metabolism rate, weight, and other factors all determine how fast your body processes and then expels CBD from your system.
Type of Consumption
The way you consume your CBD is another determining factor. CBD that is ingested orally takes longer to process and stays in your system longer. In contrast, if you vape or smoke your CBD, you will get quicker results, but the CBD will leave your system faster as well. A good guideline to remember is that efficiency of consumption equals efficiency of processing. If you’d like it in layman’s terms: the faster the CBD hits your bloodstream, the faster it’ll leave your body.
CBD’s Effects Per Product Type
The type of CBD product is not only a determining factor for how long the CBD will stay in your system, but it also determines how quickly your body reacts to the CBD and how long those effects last.
By ingesting CBD orally, as with our Full Spectrum Blue Razz CBD Gummies, the onset of the benefits will be delayed because the CBD must pass through your digestive tract before reaching the bloodstream. However, those effects will last longer than with other methods. You will likely feel the effects of the CBD between one to two hours, and those effects will last for several hours – depending on your weight, metabolism, and other factors.
CBD oil that is dropped under the tongue is called a tincture. With a product like our Full Spectrum CBD Tincture, the user puts a few drops under the tongue and holds it there for one to two minutes. This allows for the capillaries under the tongue to deliver the CBD directly into the bloodstream. From there, the CBD oil is swallowed and is processed by the digestive tract. You should feel the effects of the CBD from this method in about 30 minutes, and those effects should last up to three hours.
Vaping and Smoking
If you prefer to vape CBD oil or smoke a product like our Wedding Cake Flower, you are bringing the CBD cannabinoid directly into your lungs. The bronchi in your lungs will then distribute the CBD directly into your bloodstream. This method of delivery should cause you to feel the effects within minutes, and those effects should last anywhere between 45 minutes and a couple of hours.
If you are using a topical product like our Hemp CBD Salve, you should feel the effects within a few minutes as the healing CBD, and beneficial ingredients are absorbed through your skin and into your muscles and joints. This relief should last for a couple of hours, and, typically, the CBD is detectable in your system for another two to five days.
