- Next, both the CO2 and the oil are pumped together into the third chamber. After the gas evaporates, the final result is pure, concentrated oil.
2) The Solvent Extraction Method
The Solvent extraction method uses a solvent – like ethanol, butane, or propane, alcohol, or isopropyl – to strip the hemp plant of it’s concentrated cannabinoids. Hemp flowers and plant trimmings are soaked in the solvent, and the powerful liquid disintegrates the plant’s natural waxes, leaving behind only the beneficial compounds. Then, an evaporation process eliminates the residual solvent and the concentrated cannabinoid oil remains.
3) The Hydrocarbon Extraction Method
The Hydrocarbon extraction method uses propane and/or butane as a primary solvent because of their low boiling point. This allows for the extraction to take place without a higher heat that may harm the delicate terpenes in the hemp extract. Here’s how the extraction process works.
First, the cold, liquified hydrocarbon (or blend of hydrocarbons) washes over the hemp plants. This dissolves the cannabinoids, terpenes, lipids, and waxes within the plant.
Second, depending on the final product that is to be created, the solution may go through a number of refining methods.
Third, once the refinement is completed, the solution goes into a collection chamber where most of the solvent is removed. Generally, the removed hydrocarbon is collected and reused repeatedly.
Finally, the solution goes through an additional purging process to get rid of any remaining hydrocarbons. The solution is then ready to be made into a final product.
Obviously, this is the most dangerous of all extraction methods because of the use of butane, propane, or other hydrocarbon gases. The labs that utilize this method use specialized equipment made specifically for this type of extraction method in highly scrutinized environments. You should never try this method at home!
There are other ways CBG can be extracted, but these are the two primary methods used by the most reputable retailers. These methods are not recommended to try at home, as they are quite complex and can be very dangerous. However, there is a popular at-home alternative some adventurous consumers have tried.
In the comfort of your own kitchen, you can finely chop up hemp plant trimmings, place them on a cookie sheet, and bake them at 225º for about an hour. This helps the acids in the plant evolve to their non-acidic forms – a process called decarboxylating. Once cool, add the trimmings and olive oil to a double boiler, lightly simmer (not boil!) water over the double boiler for 2-3 hours, letting the hemp infuse the oil. It’s important the temperature remains very low because high heat can compromise the integrity of the important compounds. Once infused then cooled, use a cheesecloth to strain the trimmings from the oil. You’ll be left with a cannabinoid-infused oil to use in your favorite recipes! Note: This method yields only small concentrations of these compounds compared to the products you’d buy in stores or online.

Pretty easy, right? Inhale for four, hold for seven, exhale for eight. One cycle takes only nineteen seconds! You can surely make time to give this a try. And, if you give it a try and it feels challenging, you can easily modify it by inhaling for two counts, holding for three and a half counts, and exhaling for four counts.
